ILLUMINATIX - The Media and PR Cell of
Xavier Institute of Management Bhubaneswar Presents
Thought Leaders of Tomorrow
"Predicting the Unforeseeable Future"
A National Level Open Essay Competition on
Futurology and Futuristic Trends

Introduction
"While theoretically and technically television may be feasible, commercially and financially it is an impossibility." - Lee De Forest

"Stocks have reached a permanently high plateau." - Irving Fisher, Professor of Economics, Yale University, 1929

Well these gentlemen got it completely wrong, but here is your opportunity to play the soothsayer. ILLUMINATIX, the Student's Media and PR Cell of Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar announces the launch of "Thought Leaders of Tomorrow: Predicting the Unforeseeable Future", a national level open essay competition on futurology and futuristic trends.

Background
"There is Nothing New Under The Sun. In other words, you are not smart enough to create anything. Everything and anything that is relevant has already happened, been thought of, or tried. In other words, the future has already happened." See http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?NothingNewUnderTheSun

Futurology is the study of the medium to long-term future, by extrapolating present technological, economic or social trends, or by attempting to predict future trends.

"Several authors became recognized as futurists. They researched trends (particularly in technology, business or socieatal issues) and wrote books describing their observations, conclusions, and predictions. Initially, they followed a cycle of publishing their conclusions and then beginning research on the next book. More recently, they have started consulting groups or earn money as speakers. Alvin Toffler and John Naisbitt are two prominent examples of this class. Many business gurus present themselves as futurologists. Futurology, although sometimes based on science, cannot follow the scientific method, as it is not falsifiable except by waiting for the future to happen. It is instructive to compare predictions of the future made in the 19th century to see how accurately they predicted the present." See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Futurology.

Opportunity
In a break from tradition, we have decided not to restrict the scope of the theme by suggesting any definite topics. You are free to write on any future trend that you foresee in the areas of business, politics, technology, society or any other area of relevant human interest.

However this does not mean you can just go about building castles in the air.

The idea is to create a plausible or possible future scenario while substantiating it with historical data/trends, systematic timeline and a scientific hypothesis that should stand the basic tests of logic and sense.

The checklists of parameters that will fetch you points are:

    1. Innovative heading/introduction/title
    2. Ability to link it with it recent issues across the globe
    3. Creativity and Originality (plagiarism of any kind will lead to immediate disqualification)
    4. Hypothesis or formulation of any kind
    5. Research methodology and/or scientific theory design
    6. Well designed timeline or plan, if any

IlluminatiX: The Ximb Media and PR Cell
Pre-Xpressions 2004 Media Release
Skill City: Upgraded Version Launched

" If life doesn't give a game worth playing, then develop one" - Anthony D' Angelo

It's not that life at XIMB is in anyway lacking in activity- rather, it was the urge to develop something unique which drove a group of XIMBians to develop SKILL CITY last year. A unique game that tests capabilities such as negotiation, analytical thinking, leadership, team building skills, creativity, problem solving ability, strategy building and stress management…to name a few. These quintessential abilities are instrumental in determining the difference between an efficient manager and a wannabe.

This year, besides the b-school event, the development team has also extended the game for the corporate houses and wishes to establish it, as the one and only game of its kind to comprehensively test all those skills that are actually tested in an assessment center.

Participation Details:

The b-school event is to take place during the annual b-school festival, Xpressions, i.e. October 2- 4, 2004. This year, the selection of participants would be done on the basis of a quiz that is to be held on 14th September 2004. The quiz requires a team of 2 people and there are no upper limits to the number of teams participating from a particular institute. The format of the quiz would be uploaded on the 14 th of September along with the registration form on our site (http://www.ximb.ac.in/skillcity). The participants have to solve the quiz and e-mail us back the format by the given time. Thereafter, the selected teams would be invited to play the game in our campus. The total prize money is Rs.25,000.

The Situation of the Game:

The game takes one back to the medieval age, when there was anarchy and bloodshed all around. The crystal of life had been uprooted from the Temple of Euthania. The crystal was the source of prosperity for the world and its uprooting caused mayhem. After years of war and loss of hundreds of men, all the emperors decided to set an end to this situation and restore back peace and prosperity by placing back the crystal in the temple.

But….

This would not be an easy task. The Temple of Euthania was in the intellectual capital, Skill City, where wealth and acumen were in abundance. SKILL CITIZENS were the most skilled and astute beings on earth. They had their own defensive warfare, and these were clever traps built within the city. They would obviously not want any interference in their religious matters from outside as they prospered by the blessings of Goddess Euthania.

It is from here that the task of the teams starts. The aim is to work your way up the rungs of the city – right from the Gate to the Temple. And in this, time would be the biggest constraint and the team's soft skills, the only resources. Each module would be testing the teams on certain soft skills. The idea is to transcend all the barriers created by the citizens and reach the temple.

The game is not just about testing of managerial skills, but it creates a challenging situation for the team to resolve. Not confined indoors, the game will require an actual traversing of the make believe Skill City. Novel ways of gathering information, new ways to survive and succeed, constant adaptation to changing circumstances… this game will not just replicate the real world, it will transcend it. The differentiating factor will not be what you know, but who you are! So play the game to discover your true Self ....your true potential, your Skill set.
