ABSTRACT

Now-a-days students are provided with the opportunity to study courses as according to their wish.  This has been made possible because of distance education programmes.  E learning is a new media available for the teaching learning process.  Universities can use their websites for updating information related to various courses, for giving assignments, and for conducting tests.  The universities also have web conferencing facilities for distance programmes as the students are wide-spread.  The students' participation would also be getting improved in the e-learning process.  Thus, e-learning provide lot of opportunities for the students in pursuing their courses through distance education programme.

Introduction to Distance Education Programme

The distance education programmes are wide spread throughout the country.  A student in Tamilnadu, if interested in the curriculum of MBA course of Jammu University can register the course through distance education programme.  This is the opportunity available for students through distance education programmes.  Likewise, most of the Indian universities are catering to the needs of students all over the country through distance education programmes.  Some of the universities cater to the needs of students at global level.  Now-a-days some of the deemed to be universities also offer distance education programmes.

Current Scenario of Distance Education Programme in India

Most of the Indian universities offer courses via distance education programmes. Students can register themselves in the distance education programmes provided if they fulfill the minimum eligibility criteria.  Only very few universities conduct the entrance tests and interview for scrutinizing the students.  Some of the Indian Universities offer their service through franchise route.  The students have to make full or part payment at the time of admission, as according to the university rules and regulations.  Students after getting admitted would be sent with the course materials.  Most of the Universities provide updated course materials for the students.  The time taken by the University for sending the course material is also found to be less. Contact classes take place in different places throughout the year depending upon the nature of course. 

E Learning Programme for Distance Education Programme

E-mail and Internet are widely used everywhere.  In order to avoid the delay in delivery of course materials and to avoid outdated course materials, universities can introduce    'E Learning' for the students registering in distance education programmes.  The universities can use their websites for distance education programmes as a source for e-learning.  Students have to be allocated a separate login and have to be given a password.  With the help of the login provided a student registered can browse the website of the university and can download information pertaining to their courses.  The university can update the course materials regularly in Internet, and the students browsing such information would be able to reap those benefits.  The students should also be allowed to ask questions through e-mail and the faculty members can give their replies for such queries.  A forum can also be established for discussion of students and faculty members using websites.

The universities can also arrange for chatting facilities in between the faculty members and students.  Now-a-days web conferences are gaining popularity in developed nations.  The same can be introduced for distance education programmes in India so that the students by sitting in front of the computers in their convenient locations can have interaction with the faculty members.

Assignments can be given online and the students can also be allowed to submit their assignments online.  Online testing and evaluation can take place through Internet once in a month so that the student would also know his position in various subjects.  Various information relating to the course, syllabus, assignments, projects, time - table etc. can be communicated to the students using e-mail.  The students can also be given information regarding various educational websites for further references.  The Universities offering e- learning for distance education programme can also have tie-up with foreign universities for sharing of information resources so that the student community of both the universities would be getting benefited.

Benefits of E Learning in Distance Education Programme

i. Quick delivery of information takes place for the students when comparing with other medium of communication.

ii. The interest of students gets developed when they work with computer and Internet.

iii. The clarification of doubt takes place immediately.

iv. Assignments can be made interesting.

v. As online tests can be conducted frequently, continuous learning for examination takes place.

Conclusion

E Learning provides lot of opportunities for the students when comparing to other media of learning.  Continuous updating of knowledge takes place as the course materials are updated regularly.    The level of participation among students gets improved consistently.   Thus, E Learning enables the students for continuous updating of knowledge, enhances their IT skills and paves way for time management in the teaching-learning process.
