CAMS Chairman, Mr V Balaraman felicitated by IIT Madras for 'Institute Chair' at 'Alumnite 2016' event

IIT Madraslaunched an "Institute Chair" in its Department of Mechanical Engineering. The Chair has been established in the name of Mr. Venkataratnam Balaraman. 

Mr. Balaraman, currently the Chairman of Computer Age Management Services (CAMS), India's premium Mutual Fund service partner, is a manager par excellence with a long and distinguished career as the Managing Director, Pond's India Limited and thereafter as Director, Hindustan Unilever Limited. Mr Balaraman, is a graduate in Mechanical Engineering from the prestigious College of Engineering, Guindy, affliated to the Anna University and a post graduate in Business management (PGDM) from IIM Ahmedabad.He serves as independent director on the boards of several renowned companies.

The chair is a recognition of Mr Balaraman's contribution as mentor and guide as hedid not stop at being a successful professionalbut was an inspiring teacher. He has the unique ability to 'Transform managers into leaders'. The most notable of his achievements is the large number of protégés who worked under him, absorbed his value systems, and went on to occupy positions of high leadership in India and abroad.  Several corporate leaders and managers have gained and are inspired from his acumen for good governance and corporate ethics. 

Mr. V Balaraman , expressed his pleasure at the association and said,"IITs are rare creation as they give an opportunity to students from all levels of society to build their future. Today's education is highly relevant to India and technology is the road to the future but there is a direneed to focus on research.''

Prof. N. Ramesh Babu, a faculty member from the department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Madras, will be the occupant of this chair. He has been involved in research & development work in the manufacturing domain with special focus on the development of advanced and precision machine tools. His interaction with industries, both national and international, has rendered it possible to carry out translational research from laboratory level to floor level. This chair professorship seeks to provide the professor with the dynamic impetusfor the pursuit of translational research.

The Board of Governors of IIT Madras have created "Institute Chair Professorships", to be occupied by IIT Madras professors who have distinguished themselves and have been recognized by their peers for their research and/or technology development, and who have excelled in teaching and service to the Institute/ nation/ profession. The Chair has a term of 5 years, and is renewable, provided the performance has met with or exceeded expectations.Institute Chairs are expected to play a lead role in enabling IIT Madras to meet its strategic objectives, as documented in "Strategic Plan 2020".
