Bangalore: The result of at least a year-long labour was out on Monday. Of the 1.55 lakh students, who braved the Common Admission Test (CAT) 2005, one of the toughest entrance tests in India, for
admissions to some of the prestigious B-schools in the country, only 6,185 students have crossed the first hurdle.
These 6,000-odd students have been shortlisted for group discussions (GD) and personal interviews be
conducted by the six Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) between February and April. CAT was held on November 20, 2005.
For Neha, who has been shortlisted, it is still a long way to an IIM classroom, as there are just
1,500-odd seats that the 6,185 students will now vie for. (SEE BOX)
Those who appeared for the test and have not made it to the IIMs list, will receive their percentile scores on January 6. The results will be put up on the IIM websites and also be sent to
individual candidates by post.
The GDs and interviews for all the IIMs will be held at the respective IIM and the four major metros-Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Kolkata.
Earlier, in the day, there were some glitches
on the IIM websites where the results were put up. Outstation students had to wait longer to access their results on the net due to heavy usage of the websites.
In many ways, CAT 2005 was a shocker for the 1.55 lakh students
who appeared. The number of questions was reduced to 90 from 123 in 2004, leaving very little choice for students to leave it unanswered. If that was not enough, the marking system was not uniform.
For the first time, on the
face of the question paper, the IIMs declared that every wrong answer meant a negative 0.33 per mark.
Already 83 Indian B-schools have registered with the CAT Group to admit students on the basis of the CAT scores. Several
university departments like Osmania University, University of Lucknow, Punjab Agricultural University, Banaras Hindu University, Rajasthan Agricultural University and University of Hyderabad accept CAT scores.
Some
non-business management schools like University of Petroleum and Energy Studies, National Power Training Institute and National Insurance Academy swear by CAT. In addition to this, two international B-schools will also accept the
CAT scores from this year.
The test was held at 180 centres in 24 cities across the country on November 20.
