New Delhi/Singapore:
Backtracking from its earlier stance, the government on Wednesday gave the green signal to Indian Institutes of Management to go global. The B-schools will have to amend their respective memorandum of associations (MOA) and ensure that domestic needs are addressed and expanded.

The decision, ending the month long controversy, came after a meeting between HRD minister Arjun Singh and the IIM directors. Sources said the meeting centred around the issue of the ministry's denial of permission to IIM-Bangalore to set up a campus in Singapore. IIM-B director Prakash Apte said: "There is no objection from the ministry on going abroad. They have asked us to amend he MOA and go ahead."

Observing that there were "legal barriers" in modifying the MOAs, Apte said: "We have to get the board's approval. We have to go carefully."

Singh said that the IIMs had been asked to come back in a month with
a plan on how they would address the growing local demands. "We want Indian branding not just global branding," he said.

Referring to the demand, Apte said: "IIM- B proposed to increase its intake of students to 280 this year from 250 and take it to 300 in 2007." Similarly, IIM, Kolkata plans to increase its student strength from 270 to 300 while IIM, Ahmedabad, whose student strength was 180 in 2003, plans to increase it to 280.

But IIM-A director Bakul Dholakia said: "We have no plans of going abroad.
If we feel the need, we will amend the MOA."
