Ahmedabad:
Day Zero has thrown up its heroes. A second year post graduate student of the Indian Institute of Management – Ahmedabad is reported to have landed a whopping US $1,85,000 overseas job – the highest ever in any IIM till now. The first day of the placement process began here on Wednesday. And, the domestic salary too has created a new record with an offer of
Rs.20 lakh.

The overseas offer, made by UK-based investment bank Barclays, is much higher than last year's record US $1,52,000 salary by HSBC, London, bagged by another IIM-A grad.

On the domestic front, the highest salary offered this time is by an MNC, Bain Consulting, for an Indian posting – Rs.20 lakh per annum, crossing last year's record of Rs.14.5 lakh. It even surpassed this year's lateral offer of Rs.16 lakh for a domestic job.

The day may have begun with a sombre environment hanging over the new campus of the institute as students in formals paced up and down, waiting for their turn to take the interviews lined up. "We have no time to breathe today. Some of us will be appearing for as many as a dozen interviews, each lasting up to 45 minutes," said a student.

By evening and about a dozen interviews later, the fatigue was replaced by triumphant smile – IIM-A had made it yet again.

The first day of Day Zero – a technical term for kicking off the placement process that extends for two days – had 16 international companies on campus, including new recruiters like UK-based investment bank Barings, Citigroup and BP Singapore. Regular recruiters included heavy-weights like Lehman Brothers, Deutsche Bank, McKinsey, AT Kearney, Boston Consulting Group, American Express, Booz Allen Hamilton and ABN Amro among others.

Sources said a large number of offers were made on Wednesday, including 22 by Barclays and five each by McKinsey and Booz Allen Hamilton. The students will have to confirm the acceptance of offers by end of Day 3 on Monday.
