Barclays Bank tops placements at IIM-A

Ahmedabad: With Day Zero of the placement week at the prestigious Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, drawing to a close on Thursday, nearly 85 top-dollar job offers have been made by the most preferred companies.

Although institute officials are tight-lipped about the placement process, student sources say that at least two students have been offered $1,80,000 pay packets by Barclays Bank, which has also made the highest number of offers at 22. "A student who had been offered about $1,85,000 in the pre-placement phase had his offer confirmed. A couple of other students have also got similar offers from Barclays, though the average figure is about $1,20,000 per annum for international placements with the company," an IIM-A student said. |

Although exact figures were not available, there has been a sharp increase in the salaries offered for both international and domestic placements. Last year, an IIM-A student had been offered $1,52,000 by HSBC with a posting in London while the highest domestic offer was Rs 14 lakh. This year, Bain Capital is believed to have made the highest domestic offer at over Rs 18 lakh, the student said.

Own ventures

Interestingly, at least four students have decided to stay out of the placement race and venture out on their own. One of them, Mansur Ahmed, has actually declined an offer worth £65,000 (about $1,20,000) from Deutche Bank to start his own gaming company. Another student, Gaurav Dagaonkar, has decided to steer clear of the corporate world to pursue his passion for music through his own band called `Zaahir'. Similarly, Sharath Coorg has decided to venture into real estate development while Sharath Babu is looking at starting his own catering business.
