Conceptualized to promote greater interaction between the industry and academic community, the Samiksha session on the 10th of August, 2007 was a students' delight. The topic for the discussion was "Where is the Rupee heading?" and the speakers included eminent personalities from the relevant sectors.

  • Mr. Dharmakirti Joshi, Director and Principal Economist, CRISIL Ltd.
  • Mr. Rajesh B. Ghonasgi, Chief Financial Officer, Hexaware Technologies Ltd.

  • Mr. Sunder Iyer, Partner Price Waterhouse Coopers Pvt. Ltd.
  • Mr. Jitendra Jain, Head Treasury, Radico Khaitan Ltd.
  • Mr. Bhaskar Panda, Senior VP, HDFC Bank

The students were first presented with insights on the topic by each speaker. The points brought forward by the speakers included the movement of the value of the rupee over the years, the impossible trinity, impact that the appreciation would have on the different players, on imports and exports, the role of the RBI and whether it has been doing justice to it. The other topics included effect of oil prices, effect of US economy on Indian rupee and international trends.

These presentations were then followed by a panel discussion moderated by Mr. Tamal Bandhopadhyay, bureau chief, Mumbai HT-Mint. The discussion facilitated evaluation of the ideas of the panelists by each other and they managed to reach a consensus on what the future value of the rupee would be in the coming years. Future business strategies were then discussed and the questions raised by the students were answered. The session came to a close after about 4 hours of enriching discussion.

"Samiksha gives students an opportunity to learn things by way of interaction with their role models and the fact that people from various sectors give their opinions on the matter under discussion ensures that students get a complete picture", says Arun Sudheendran, a management student at NITIE.
