Prof. Debashis Chatterjee
completes 5-year term as Director
Enhances gender diversity; instrumental in raising women enrolment to 54%

Kozhikode, 11 September, 2014: A Bengali having made Kozhikode his base, Prof. Debashis Chatterjee, completes his five year term as Director of IIM Kozhikode (IIMK). He would be handing over charge to the senior most faculty of IIM Kozhikode, Prof. Kulbhushan Balooni on Friday, 12 September, 2014.

Prof. Chatterjee has been a dynamic force of change at IIM Kozhikode and looks at the real value that education brings to society. Having taught at Harvard and IIMs he knows what education brings to the table both in the East and the West. During the last five years, Prof. Chatterjee has transformed the face of IIM Kozhikode from being an obscure small town school to an institution of national impact and global reckoning.

Over 21 years of teaching and still a long way to go, the journey so far by Prof. Chatterjee has been an endeavour to create a hallmark of 'Globalizing Indian Thought'. During his tenure as Director of IIM Kozhikode, Prof. Chatterjee created history by increasing the enrolment of women up to 54% in the flagship post graduate program. This was a game-changing policy of enhancing the gender diversity of the IIM classroom. As compared to the last 50 years, the IIM enrolment of females was stagnant at 8-10%.

Highlights of Prof. Chatterjee's achievements as Director of IIM Kozhikode from 2009 to 2014 are:

1. Setting up the Yale University IIM Kozhikode Centre for Excellence in Academic Leadership (CEEAL) as part of the Singh-Obama knowledge Initiative

2. Tripled the enrolment of faculty in IIM Kozhikode attracting faculty of Ivy League schools across the world

3. Post Graduate and Executive Post Graduate Programmes received global accreditation from London based AMBA

4. Rolled back the annual fee for the Post Graduate Programme giving much relief to economically weaker students

5. Architect of Leading Schools Workshop that has been attended by more than 11,000 school teachers and principals across India. Prof. Chatterjee was instrumental in raising funds that enabled participating teachers to avail of full scholarship

6. Conducting a course on Managerial Perspective for its PGP students wherein 32 faculty teams taught courses to 300 students

7. Served as member of several policy making, selection committees and bodies of Government of India (including the one which has appointed the first woman to head the State Bank of India in 2013), and is widely consulted on policy issues that surround both management education  and corporate management in India

8. Architect of PAN-IIM World Conference that IIM Kozhikode will be hosting during November 2014

9. Corpus fund of IIMK has increased from Rs. 85.31 crores to Rs. 263 crores, i.e. more than 300% increase in revenues in last 5 years

Born on Teacher's Day, 5 September, Prof. Chatterjee longs to back his ''original aspiration of being a worthy teacher and a good human being". He holds the tenure as Professor of Organizational Behaviour at IIM Lucknow. Incidentally, a few years back Prof. Chatterjee tutored the entire Kerala Cabinet, including Chief minister Shri. Oommen Chandy, in IIM Kozhikode.

Prof. Chatterjee's other notable achievements are creating a satellite campus for IIMK in Kochi and onsite programs in Jammu and Kashmir. He has cleared the way for the launch of IIMK's programs in Mumbai and Coimbatore; he also pioneered setting up the first ever Indian Business Museum with contributions from top 100 Indian business houses and public Institutions such as ISRO, RBI.

IIM Kozhikode has achieved added heights of academic rigour, research focus and education excellence under Prof. Chatterjee's astute guidance.  Brand IIM Kozhikode is now a household name in Kerala and India with the efforts of its Director's quest for excellence with a human face.
