IIM Kozhikode Celebrates 17th Annual Convocation
55% Women Students Graduate in PGP 2013-15 Batch


* Total of 510 students to receive graduation certificates
161 executive MBAs and one FPM participant to also graduate

Kozhikode, April 4, 2015: Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIMK), one of the proud members of the IIM fraternity today felicitated 510 students as theygraduated from the institute to become the leaders of tomorrow. Of the total of 348 students graduating for the Post Graduate Programme (PGP), 55% were women students, which is a milestone for IIMK.

The students of IIMK donned their black robes to receive their convocation certificates in the institute's 17th convocation, amidst their proud parents, invited guests and distinguished members of the academia. Also graduating were 161 Executive Master of Business Administration (MBA) students and one participant from the Fellow Programme in Management (FPM).

The convocation was presided over by the Chief Guest Shri. N. Ram, Chairman, Kasturi & Sons Ltd., and former Editor-in-chief and Publisher of The Hindu group of publications. The occasion was graced by Dr. A.C. Muthiah, Chairman, Board of Governors (BoG), Prof. Kulbhushan Balooni, the director in-charge of IIM Kozhikode along with other members of the IIMK Board and trustees.

The ceremony began with the inspiring words of wisdom by Dr. A.C. Muthiah, the Chairman, BoG, IIM Kozhikode, according to whom the ceremony marks the beginning of a new phase of life where the students need to leave the safety of an academic institution and embark on their own professional journeys. This degree is just one of the many milestones they need to cross throughout their lives. He also highlighted the distance that the institute has traversed during the past 19 years and its academic achievements in terms of 40 research papers and 80 conference papers in the past one year alone. He went on to say that structural infrastructure is not that difficult but building the intellectual infrastructure is a challenging task. Recognizing the Institute for its academic and professional achievements, the Institute has been assigned the task of mentoring and giving shape to the new IIM being set up in Punjab.

Prof. Kulbhushan Balooni, director-in-charge, brought into limelight the host of achievements of the institute which included the high ranking scholarly publications by the faculty, hosting of international conferences and the commencement of a Distinguished Public Lecture Series. The campus expansion project complying with the ambitious Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment norms (GRIHA) and the highly successful Promoting Regional Schools to International Standards through Multiple Interventions (PRISM) social development project now adopted by the Kerala Government (popularly called Mission 100) also found mention in his address. He also conveyed a note of appreciation to the exceptional achievements of the students in various national and international events.

Sh. N. Ram, in his convocation address, highlighted IIMK's vision theme "Globalizing Indian Thought", in its pursuit of developing innovative, socially responsible and environmentally friendly practitioners, leaders and educators. He was appreciative of IIMK's inclination towards social and sympathy and empathy in imparting education even to the non-privileged in society. He exhorted the students to be socially responsible professional entrepreneurs and value creators. He emphasized that every institution is facing challenge in terms of commitment to quality and finding imperative means to affordable education. He entrusted upon the students the duty to be morally obligated in keeping the brand IIMK ever shining.

Since 2010, IIMK has been significantly contributing to the growing trend of women leaders with the intake growing to approximately 200 women out of a batch of 348 in 2013-15. There has been a steady rise of this number from 31.5% in 2010 to its current 55%. The 17th Batch of PGP, the Class of 2015 consists of students with 0-24 months' work experience, adding to the diversity of students. This batch consists of students from all corners of the country Southern India (27%), Western India (26%), Northern India (19%), Eastern India (12%), Union Territories including Delhi (11%) and Central India (5%). Students from Assam, Jammu & Kashmir, Tripura and Jharkhand, adding more cultural diversity to the PGP 17 batch.
