The Aditya Birla Group
Scholarship Programme

IN HOMAGE TO A LEGEND
WHO LIVES ON
5 YEARS, 92 SCHOLARS, ONE GREAT VISION

"March on boldly, seize the opportunity and meet the challenges head on. Shirk not from putting your best foot forward", is what our legendary leader, the late Aditya Vikram Birla would often say. He walked the talk and built the first Indian international conglomerate, way back in the 1960s.
The Aditya Birla Group Scholarship programme is our way of saluting him. Of translating his vision of spawning global leaders through incubating talent and nurturing meritocracy. Through fostering
outstanding academic excellence by partnering with select IITs, BITS (Pilani) and IIMs.
Instituted in 1999, the 71 Aditya Birla Scholars are doing us proud. Many in high places,
in India and globally.
The selection process entails inviting the top 20 students each from these premier institutes. The aspiring students' applications are evaluated on parameters pegged not only on academic excellence, but in a more holistic manner. Taking on board their extra-curricular activities, the manifestation of their leadership qualities and an articulation of their values, their vision and their aspirational goals.

This process has led to the short-listing of 49 candidates. They have been interviewed in Mumbai on the 27th of September 2003 by an eminent jury. Our panel of judges comprised :
For the IIMs Mr. Pradep Baijal, Chairman, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India;
Mr. R. Gopalakrishnan, Executive Director, Tata Sons; Mr. Arun Maira, Chairman, The Boston Consulting Group, India; and Mr. Dileep Padgaonkar, Consulting Editor, The Times of India.
For the IIT/BITS (Pilani) Mr. Kiran Karnik, President, NASSCOM, Prof. Arvind Kumar, Director,
Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education; and Prof. Rajaram Nityananda, Director,
National Centre for Radio Astrophysics.
And they have named this academic year's 21 "Aditya Birla Scholars", who we hope will subscribe to his philosophy. One that all of us in the Aditya Birla Group - 72,000 colleagues have great faith faith in.
Simply put, in the words of Aditya Vikram Birla,
"Believe that you can't be beaten and you won't".

The Aditya Birla Scholars, 2003-2004
