National Seminar On
Teaching Business Communication
at Indian Business Schools
March 16-17, 2001

The Scene :
Most business school in India put their students through a course on communication. There is, however, little agreement among them on what should go into it. The varied course titles tell the story well: Communication skills, Business communication, Organizational communication, Written analysis and communication, Executive communication, Managerial oral communication, Marketing communication, Business English.....
The B-schools agree that now they have to prepare their graduates to communicate with a much greater variety of people and in a much wider range of cultural contexts than just a few years ago. They readily accept that the challenge of communication is made tougher by the way information technology has fundamentally altered its scope and means. The emergence of unprecedented competition in the market place has made high levels of ability to communicate a matter of survival for managers. How should B-schools help their students face this challenge?
Some of the simplest and commonest skills are the hardest to capture, analyse, and teach. Ability to communicate is one such. All have it; few master it. The national seminar on the teaching of business communication brings together B-school faculty, management trainers, and industry representatives for a joint exploration of the issues involved in teaching this simple skill.

Objectives :
To determine the place of business communication on the B-school curriculum.
To develop and recommend a detailed syllabus for a business communication course that responds adequately to the needs of industry in the coming years.
To share with fellow professionals - business school faculty and independent consultants - successful teaching methodologies evaluation techniques, and other pedagogical resources.
To launch a special interest group of business communication professionals.

Participants :
The seminar is open to all the stakeholders - faculty who teach communication at B-schools, management consultants who train executives in communication skills, and managers, especially HR managers, who can articulate industry' experiences and expectations.

Procedure & Deadlines :
There will be three types of presentations at the seminar.
First key presentations. These will be delivered by eminent professionals as well as leaders of industry specially invited to share their insights with us.
Second, research-based presentations. If you would like to make a 10-15 minute presentation on any of the topics below or their subtopics, please send us (fax or e-mail, please) an abstract of about 200 words by December 20, 2000. By the end of December we will let you know if the organizing committee has accepted it. The full paper and registration form with the appropriate fee should reach us by January 31, 2001.
Third, relatively informal sharing of experiences of demonstration of techniques. For this also we need a brief note from you by December 20, 2000. Please indicate the minimum time you will need. The registration deadline is January 31, 2001.
Even if you do not wish to make any presentation, you are welcome to attend the seminar. There will be enough opportunities for you to contribute to and learn from the discussions.
Please register by January 31, 2001 at the latest.
