IIM Kozhikode

Dabbawallahs to Address B-Schoolers at Opus 2006
Annual Operations Seminar of IIM Kozhikode
25th and 26th of November 2006

The Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode, will organize the 2006 edition of its annual operations seminar , Opus, at its campus in Calicut, on the 25th and 26th of November. The theme of the seminar is "India Inc. - from Sustenance to Operational Excellence." The seminar would provide a platform for experts and innovators from the field of operations to share their views about the latest developments, the future and their critical analysis of the direction in which the field is developing. The Hindu Business Line is the Print Media Partner and CoolAvenues the Online Media Partner for the event.

Delivering meals might not sound so cutting edge, but the runners of Mumbai, popularly called "Dabbawallahs," are a huge phenomenon. From hep management gurus to Prince Charles, everyone has marveled at their efficiency. One of the few organizations in the world to achieve a Six Sigma rating, their runners use a hugely complicated combination of color, symbol coding and precision timing to pick up more than 170,000 lunches from the suburbs every working day and deliver them to offices, as well as schools and colleges. Though the work sounds simple, it is actually a highly specialized trade that is over a century old and which has become integral to Mumbai's culture.

Mr. Raghu Megde (President) and Mr. Gangaram Talekar (Secretary), Nutan Mumbai Tiffin Box Suppliers Association (The Mumbai Dabbawallahs) will be the two of the speakers at Opus this year and will talk about the efficiency of their supply chain.

The other speakers who will address the seminar participants include:

  • Mr. Rakesh Rajora, Vice President, Accenture
  • Mr. Ravind Mithe, Chief Consultant (Operations), ECS
  • Mr. Syed, Miebach Logistics Group
  • Mr. Pradeep Jadhav, Manager, CHAINalytics
  • Mr. Sameer Shukla, Bristlecone Consulting

Introduction:

"Banks the world over are scrambling to become larger, whether by organic growth or by mergers and acquisitions" .... says Robert Cottrell in The Economist, May 2006. The pressure of competition in the banking, particularly in the globalised environment, is pushing banks to widen their geographical boundaries and range of products/services, with a view to achieving economies of scale, besides expanding their scope for improving their efficiency. Public sector banks (PSBs) are being goaded to merge and become bigger, because 'bigger' is supposed to be better in a globalised world. The Union Finance Minister, Mr Chidambaram said that it is important for PSBs to grow "in scale and muscle" so that they can compete effectively with "world class banks". The economies of scale will enable the merged entity to become comparable to some of the bigger international banks. This will be an added advantage for financial institutions in a liberalised financial environment, to increasingly get exposed to cross-border flows of capital. There have been nearly 40 cases of bank mergers in India since 1969 with Bank of Bihar merging with State Bank of India. Since then, it has been going on in a slow pace but now it is gaining momentum with globalization of Indian economy and increasing international competition in banking. Thus, there is a need for a common platform, as this seminar, for experts from corporate and the academia to deliberate on the nuances of banks' mergers and acquisitions for carving the future roadmap.

Objective:

Under the globalised scenario, the Indian banks need to gird up their loins to address the problems of growth to avoid being reduced to pigmies and rarely figure in the international rankings and ratings. As rightly pointed out by the Union Finance Minister Mr Chidambaram, unless Indian banks merge and consolidate they would not get global recognition let alone the competitive advantage.

With the adoption of BASEL II norms the Indian banks are trying to find a place among international peers but the various provisions of the BASEL II leave many issues that need to be addressed in a systematic and meticulous way as there is no place for Non-Performing Banks. Thus size of the bank assumes significance. These issues shall be addressed during the seminar by the experts.

Invitation:

The two day seminar invites papers on sub-themes listed below from delegates from all over the country which include faculty of Educational Institutions, faculty of banks' training institutions, researchers, executives from the banks, corporate bodies, government and non- government administrators, and the students of B-schools.

Papers will be presented by the delegates in different sessions wherein the presenters will be provided with all the necessary hightech services.

Sessions' Themes:

* Indian Banks on Growth Trajectory
* Incentivising Bank Mergers – Regulators' Role.
