50 years ago the global population was around 2.6 billion people. Today it is around 6.6 billion individuals. By 2030, our planet will house over 8 billion persons. The human species has around 25 years to prepare for the care and feeding of an additional 1.4 billion people. Much of this massive increase in population will occur in developing countries like India.

Nations experiencing population growth will be forced to innovate ways to create jobs in volumes unprecedented in human experience. Entrepreneurs have historically been a major source of job creation. Wealth is a consequence of their entrepreneurial actions.

Management Development Institute, one of India 's top ranking B-Schools, is hosting a 3-day international conference on Job and Wealth Creation through Entrepreneurship in October 2006, in collaboration with the School of Public Policy , George Mason University , Fairfax , U.S.A. and the Max Planck Institute of Economics, Jena , Germany . This conference will bring together entrepreneurs from a variety of industry verticals, academics from multiple disciplines and policy makers from different government agencies.

VENUE

The venue for the conference sessions is the Management Development Institute Campus in Gurgaon, about 10 kilometers (6.21 miles) from the Indira Gandhi International Airport , New Delhi , India 's capital city. Gurgaon is home to Indian majors like Ranbaxy, Hero, and Airtel. It is also a destination of choice for global companies like Suzuki, Honda and American Express.

ACCOMMODATION

A block of 50 single occupancy rooms has been reserved for conference participants at the MDI. Room rates are $25 per night. Reservations will be based on a first come first served basis. Arrangements are being made to find additional accommodation in nearby corporate guesthouses and hotels. Rates range from US$45 to US$400 a night.

MDI will offer participants, who register for the Conference before August 31, 2006 , assistance in finding accommodations. Please note that hotel rooms in Gurgaon get sold several weeks in advance. The rapid economic growth in Gurgaon brings domestic and international business travelers to the city. This places a severe pressure on accommodation. Please reserve your hotel rooms in advance if you do not want to stay in the MDI guest houses. Information on guest houses and hotels in Gurgaon are available on the web.

About the Conference

The nature of entrepreneurship and investments in innovation have an impact on competitiveness of a nation. Globally there is a growing yearning for sustainable businesses. There is a need to re-look at entrepreneurial initiatives which match with the local context. Countries require entrepreneurial solutions addressing their cultural and socio-economic complexities. Innovation needs to be hence linked to the local context and tracked in various functional areas in the services sector. The developed economies have been seedbeds of entrepreneurship which has resulted in firms transcending national boundaries. This conference attempts to explore the dynamics of entrepreneurship and innovation in the services sector. Emergence of business potential in emerging economies such as China, India, Brazil, Eastern Europe has led to emergence of strategies such as outsourcing, mergers and acquisitions, franchising, strategic alliances, management contracts etc. This conference attempts to debate the management challenges for initiating and sustaining successful entrepreneurship and innovation in the services industry.

PAPER SUBMISSIONS ARE INVITED FROM VARIOUS SERVICE INDUSTRY SECTORS.

Track I: Entrepreneurship in Emerging Areas in Services Industry

This track explores the dynamics of entrepreneurship in emerging areas such as ITES, Retailing, Real Estate Management, Biotechnology and Hospitality among other service sectors. The papers could be empirical or theoretical contributions. Papers reflecting best practices and submission of case studies on excellence are welcome. Studies based on impact of globalization branding, creation/death of enterprises, alliances, mergers and acquisitions across various areas are invited.

Some of the areas which would be explored in this track are:

• National innovation systems for growth of entrepreneurship across countries
• What have been the driving mechanisms for emergence of entrepreneurship in segments such as biotechnology, ITES, telecommunication, real estate management, hospitality?
• The emergence of multinationals with Asian origins
• Forms of entrepreneurship initiated by developed countries to expand in emerging economies
• Impact of culture on entrepreneurship in emerging areas such as ITES, biotechnology, and Research across various segments.
• Why have certain countries been able to leapfrog in certain service industry categories — sector wise or focused industry research papers are welcome
• Role of technology and its impact on entrepreneurship in emerging service sectors
• Dynamics of entrepreneurship in high tech areas.

Track II: Public Private Partnerships in the Services Industry

Best Practices across various service sectors are invited. The track explores nature of such partnerships, critical success factors, role of the private sector, role of government across various economies.

Some of the research questions which can be explored are:

• What is the role of various institutions on emergence of public private partnerships – studies across various service sectors are welcome.
• What is the nature and form of such organizations?
• What is the nature and source of funding of such partnerships?
• Case studies across various industry sectors across developed and developing countries are welcome.

Track III: Sustainable Entrepreneurship Practices in Services Industry

Cases are invited for sustainable entrepreneurship practices in services sector. Papers are invited on use of development of sustainable services, sustainable technologies, challenges faced by such firms and documentation on outstanding business practices on sustainable entrepreneurship, environmental concerns, concerns for society.

Some of the research questions which can be explored are:

• How can the corporate firms move towards the sustainable development paradigm?
• Exploration of factors which could help the firms make a shift towards this segment.
• Role of international organizations such as World Bank, UNIDO, UN, ADB to facilitate movement towards sustainable development approach for the corporate firms.
• Role of financial institutions industry associations, civil society, NGO's to initiate a shift towards sustainable development paradigm
• Case studies documenting test practices across various service sectors and services related with manufacturing segments are invited.

Track IV: Innovation Across Various Services Sectors

This track explores innovation in services industry across various functional areas such as marketing, finance, HR, supply chain practices, production, and technology. The track also explores issues related with models of funding of these innovations. Papers are also invited on the role of government, venture capitalists, public and the private sector. Models of managing innovation in both nascent and mature industry sectors are invited.

This track invites submissions on some of the following areas of services industry:

• Innovations across various functional areas such as marketing, finance, HR, operations, technology strategy in services industry and service businesses associated with manufacturing firms.
• Managing of innovation in old and established firms — corporate entrepreneurship and its manifestation
• Paradigms of management of innovation in mature industry
• Paradigms of management of innovation in emerging industry
• Mechanisms of institutionalizing innovation in a country, industry and firm level

Track V: Emergence of Clusters in the Services Sector

The clusters are geographical proximate groups of inter connected companies, suppliers, services providers and associated institutions in a particular field, linked by commonalities and complementarities. Papers are invited on the following aspects:

• Impact of clusters on productivity of the firms/industries
• Impact of clusters on capacity for innovation
• Impact on new business formation
• The role of the government and the private sector in emergence of such clusters.
• Role of science parks
• Academic - Industry partnership and relationship with clusters
• Innovation in Services in the Manufacturing Sector
• Value added services in automobiles sector

Track VI: Ethics and Entrepreneurship

This track explores the relationship of ethics and entrepreneurship. The track would assess issues related with emergence of new forms of organization, management paradigm and role played by various institutions such as the government, society, religious groups, NGO's.

Some of the research questions which could be addressed in this track are:

• Emerging paradigm/models for ethical entrepreneurship
• Exploring the need for ethical practices
• Regulatory mechanism and implementation of ethical models of businesses
• Recognition and reward for implementing ethical businesses
• Factors facilitating and impeding shift to ethics based businesses.
• Spiritual interface to Business — The New Paradigm

Panel Discussions

Panel discussions would be organized in the area of best practices in marketing, HR, finance, telecom and the Industry leaders would participate. These would be chaired by eminent people from academics and industry.

Cancellation and substitution policy

Call for Papers

Papers are invited on the listed themes. The papers may be in the form of empirical research, theoretical models based on extensive research, case studies, documentation of best practices among other aspects. Papers are invited both from practioners and academics. Paper must be submitted in the MS Word format as an email attachment.

The paper should not be more than 5000 words. The abstract should be about 200-250 words.

"Food Insecurity: A great threat to human security"

The International Student Young Pugwash (ISYP) and the M S Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) are organizing a workshop on "Food Insecurity: A great threat to Human Security" from 29 January - 1 February 2007 at MSSRF, Chennai. The theme of this Workshop represents the UN Millennium Development Goal No.1 and World Food Summit Declaration for reduction in the level of poverty and malnutrition. Where hunger rules, peace cannot prevail. The Workshop will hence be a timely intervention and will provide a platform to discuss issues related to poverty, hunger and macro- and micro-nutrient deficiencies among young children, women and men in developing countries. It is expected that about 150 participants representing different countries in the South Asian Region as well as from other countries will take part in developing an action plan to overcome the ecological, economic and equity challenges facing farmers and farming in the world.
