Retest Policy

The Graduate Management Admission Council® has established a retest policy to ensure the validity and security of the GMAT® for all test takers.

You may take the Graduate Management Admission Test® (GMAT®) only once per calendar month and no more than five times within any 12-month period. (If you are eligible to retake the GMAT® and wish to make a test appointment now, see Schedule a GMAT Appointment.)

The retest policy applies even if you cancel or ETS cancels your scores from a test administration within that time period (see Canceling Your Scores). Test scheduling representatives and test center administrators are not authorized to waive or modify the retest policy for any reason.

If you take the GMAT® more often than allowed, your new scores will not be reported and you will forfeit your test fee. You may also be prohibited from future GMAT® testing. The retest policy will be enforced even if a violation is not immediately identified (for example, because of inconsistent registration information) and your test scores are reported. In such cases, your scores will be canceled and your score report recipients will be notified of the cancellation.

Retest Policy Appeals

If you wish to take the GMAT® more than five times within a 12-month period, you must request permission in writing by mail or e-mail. Requests will only be accepted after the fifth test has been taken.

Your written request must contain the following information:

  2. previous test dates and locations
  3. full (legal) name
  4. mailing address

  8. fax number (if available)
  9. e-mail address (if available)
  10. Social Security or national ID number (optional)

Sending Schools Your New Scores

If you retake the test and want to send your new scores to schools you have previously designated as score recipients, select these schools at the time you retake the GMAT®. Your scores from the three most recent test dates within the last five years will be reported to the institutions you designate as score recipients.

To send your scores to additional schools, you may submit an additional score report request for a fee after you retake the GMAT®. For instructions on submitting a request, see Sending Your Scores to Schools.
